How to Make an Impact During Pride Month
June is Pride Month, and every year, many of us use this opportunity to participate in festivals, parades, and other celebrations that commemorate LGBTQ+ culture and activism throughout the years. The first Pride Month began in June 1969 when Stonewall Inn, a gay club in Greenwich Village, was raided by police. Although the resulting riots had many leaders, Marsha P. Johnson, a black, trans, bisexual woman, spearheaded the movement, which went on for six days. It served as a worldwide catalyst for other similar marches and parades.
Celebrating Pride Month
There are many ways for you to celebrate Pride Month and uplift the LGBTQ+ community. Here are some ideas to get you started:
-
1. Learn more about the history of Pride Month: While many of us understand what Pride is about, not everyone truly knows its rich history or the struggles the LGBTQ+ community endured in its ongoing fight for equal rights. You can also share the information you learn with others around you, so they can have a better understanding of what this month means and why it is important.
2. Show your Pride spirit by decorating your home: Whether you identify as LGBTQ+ or you are an ally, decorating your home with Pride décor is a great way to express your support. Something as simple as a custom yard sign that supports the LGBTQ+ community could have a profoundly positive effect on those around you.
3. Attend a Pride Parade: In cities throughout the world, Pride Parades are held. Artists, politicians, celebrities, and other influential figures often attend to give speeches, perform, and lend their visibility to an incredible movement about diversity and love.
4. Donate to an LGBTQ+ organization: If you can afford it, giving money to a cause is always an effective way to show your support. If you cannot donate money, consider volunteering your time at an LGBTQ+ organization. There are many resources you could contribute that could help fuel the advancement of LGBTQ+ rights.
5. Wear Pride-themed apparel: LGBTQ+ clothing is another way to get your message of love across in a colorful and visible way. Even something as simple as a rainbow manicure can show off your solidarity in a colorful and creative way. It might even serve as a great conversation starter about Pride month.
6. Explore LGBTQ+ films, literature, and TV shows: Look for content with LGBTQ+ creators or content that helps you better understand the LGBTQ+ experience.
7. Host an LGBTQ+ party: Participating in a big, colorful parade is an incredible experience, but large gatherings are not for everyone. For the more introverted friends and family in your life, consider hosting an LGBTQ+ party where you can all wear your flashiest Pride gear and celebrate your community.
Everyone can embrace and enjoy Pride Month, regardless of their background or personal history. It is a month that is all about love and acceptance, so embrace your Pride this June.
